What is an IEC?

What Is an IEC — And Why Do Families Work With One?

When I’m asked, “What do you do for a living?”, the short answer is:
I’m an IEC — an Independent Educational Consultant.

The longer answer?
I help students — especially those who learn differently, have unique strengths, or face challenges — navigate the college admissions process with confidence and success. IECs provide individualized attention, unbiased guidance, and expert knowledge of programs and opportunities nationwide.

What Does an Independent Educational Consultant Do?

As professional college counselors, IECs support families the way a school-based guidance counselor might — but at a deeper and more personalized level, and with far more time dedicated to each student.

We:

  • Help students explore majors, career paths, and academic interests

  • Review extracurriculars, volunteer hours, and leadership opportunities

  • Recommend strategies to strengthen applications

  • Prepare students for college interviews, essays, and scholarship search

  • Create college lists based on fit — not just name recognition

Because IECs work with a limited number of families, we can devote the time and attention required to understand the whole picture: academics, learning style, mental health considerations, finances, and goals for the future.

Why Families Choose IECs

ICCs travel nationwide to visit colleges, speak with admissions teams, and experience campuses firsthand. We do this because marketing materials never tell the full story — and students deserve more than guessing.

A balanced list matters. Too many reach schools rarely produce the outcome families hope for. Likewise, a safety school is not a lower-quality school; it just means it aligns better with your student’s profile.

Choosing a college is not about prestige — it’s about fit, support, and opportunities to thrive.

IECs Are Specialists — And It Matters

Many IECs specialize in athletics, visual and performing arts, STEM, first-generation students, or neurodivergent learners.

My specialty is supporting students with:

  • Autism spectrum

  • ADHD or executive-function challenges

  • Anxiety and emotional regulation

  • Learning differences

  • Students who feel “lost,” overlooked, or misunderstood

I share that openly because it’s part of my story.
I was born with epilepsy. I’m autistic. A doctor once told my parents I might not live past age two — yet here I am, thriving and helping others beat the odds, too.

When your child works with someone who understands their lived experience, the process becomes less overwhelming — and far more hopeful.

How an IEC Helps Families Make Informed Decisions

While no IEC can guarantee an admission decision, I can promise this:

I will work with your student to present the strongest, most authentic application possible and help your family evaluate fit from every angle:

  • Financial

  • Social

  • Academic

  • Cultural

  • Emotional and executive-function support

Choosing a college is a four-year investment — one that impacts confidence, community, and career opportunities. Students who explore, research, and reflect are better positioned to make the right choice.

Attend virtual information sessions. Ask questions. Take notes. Be an informed consumer of your education.

Let’s Make This Process Informative — and Enjoyable

The college admissions journey doesn’t have to be stressful or confusing. With the right guidance, it can be empowering and even fun.
