Visiting University of Chicago

I had the opportunity to visit the University of Chicago while on a college tour of schools in Wisconsin and Illinois in September. The University of Chicago has approximately 18,523 total students, including 7,653 undergraduate students and 10,870 graduate students. The University of Chicago is remarkable in many ways. The architecture and landscaping, as they showed us, purposefully blur the lines between traditional and chart their own path. The University of Chicago, a private research university located in Chicago, Illinois, is renowned for its rigorous academic standards, commitment to free intellectual inquiry, and influential contributions to fields such as economics, science, and public policy. UCI requires a rigorous core curriculum, renowned schools such as the Booth School of Business, the Harris School of Public Policy, and the Pritzker School of Medicine. Our tour guide was a triple major with plans to attend law school

The University of Chicago is one of the most intellectually intense universities in the country—famously rigorous, deeply curious, and perfect for students who thrive on discussion, inquiry, and academic challenge. A campus visit is the best way to understand whether the UChicago mentality feels like a fit. Here’s what to look for on your visit:

1️⃣ Start With the Classics: The Quadrangles & Cobb Gate

Walking through Cobb Gate into the main Quad feels like stepping onto a Gothic mini-Oxford. Encourage students to notice:

  • The blend of historic architecture and modern research buildings

  • How students interact—are they discussing classes? Research? House culture? The overall vibe: contemplative, energetic, quirky, or intense?

Residential life matters here. Every student belongs to a “House,” which serves as a built-in community—ideal for students with ADHD or anxiety who benefit from structured support.

    If possible, check out:

    • Campus North Residential Commons

    • Renee Granville-Grossman Residential Commons

    • House lounges, kitchens, and events boards

Ask about how RAs, tutors, and housemates support each other.

UChicago’s Core Curriculum is famously unique—heavy on humanities, inquiry, and discussion-based courses.

    Students should reflect on:

    • Do they enjoy reading, writing, and thinking deeply?

    • Does the idea of “life of the mind” excite them—or not so much?

    • How do small discussion seminars fit their learning style?

This matters especially for neurodivergent students who need structure, depth, and consistency.

Being admitted to UC is challenging, given its 4% acceptance rate. Applicants demonstrate intellectual curiosity, intense rigor, and a desire to learn. The average GPA is 3.825, and the average SAT is 1510. Students work hard and play hard, with traditions like the annual Scavenger Hunt, the Aims of Education Address, and discussions on the benefits of a liberal arts education. Additionally, students attend the Harper Lectures and the Ryerson Lectures, both of which offer opportunities to engage in scholarly discourse. U Chicago is known for its quirky supplemental essay questions, so give them some thought and let the readers get to know you. To learn more about the University of Chicago, go to
