Visiting Mercer University

Visiting Mercer University was one of the highlights of attending the recent SACAC conference in Georgia. SACAC stands for Southern Association of College Admissions Counselors. For three days, as far as the eye could see, admissions professionals from the schools, independent counselors and community based organizations gathered together to celebrate all that is exciting about college admissions in the southern region. First, though, we visit the schools. Mercer University is everything a quintessential college campus should be. I learned it was founded in 1833 as a private university in Macon, Georgia. Additional campuses are in Savannah and Atlanta. It’s beautiful, surrounded by perfectly landscaped lawns and students deeply engaged in the business of learning.

With a 13:1 student to faculty ratio and 3500 residential undergraduate students, Mercer effectively combines the beauty of a small school on a large amount of land. There was so much to see and take in. With over 70 majors, there’s likely to be something that fits your needs. Mercer’s athletic teams, the Bears, compete in NCAA Division I, and the football team made history as the first college football game played in Georgia in 1892. While Mercer remains test optional for the Fall of 2025, it will become test required for the fall of 2026. It was definitely one of my favorite campus visits so far.
