Finding Your College Fit

Finding A School That Fits You

How do you find your best-fit college? Exploring colleges should be an informative and enjoyable process. There are over 4000 colleges and universities; at least ten of them should exceed your expectations and make it to the Common App list by application day. There are big and small ones, co-ed and single-gender ones, and quite a few are religiously affiliated. Many colleges are in big cities. Hundreds are in small towns. On some campuses, you will be lost in a crowd; on others, you will know everyone by name. How can a person decide what to do?

What Determines Best Fit?

You will spend approximately 17,280 hours in college; you owe it to yourself to spend at least a few hours (per school) researching the environment, the courses, the professors, and, of course, the affordability of your being able to attend.  Academics, campus culture, financial aid, and career services also measure fit. Those factors determine what is called “fit.” Nowhere is “rank” mentioned in “fit.”

How Do You Find Your Fit?

College fit is how you feel when you are on campus. Do you feel at home? Welcomed? Do you feel like you belong and could stay there? Further,  college rank is an opinion driven by business. The two aren’t the same. Fit is that special feeling when you know you’ve found your place. Remember your secret handshake with your closest friends that no one else understood? You couldn’t fully articulate what connected you, but your bond was forever in sync. That’s a great fit.

How an IEC Can Help The Family

As an IEC, we strive diligently to find out what motivates you. What do you aspire to be? Secondly, who do you hope to become one day? How can we find the best place at the most affordable cost for you to make that a reality? College fit encompasses all of these factors.  Be open to hearing ideas about schools and locations you hadn’t considered. Don’t rule anything out yet.

Additionally, do the schools offer the major you want with classes that interest you? Have you compared majors by school? What about the residence halls? Are there things to do off campus? Is there transportation? All of these are things to consider when finding your best fit.

Which things do you have to be comfortable with at a college? Which can you be more flexible about?
